It's been a rough year for all of us, but especially for Simon Cowell. The famous entrepreneur and brutally honest talent judge on American Idol and America's Got Talent underwent emergency back surgery in August after an accident on a new electric bike. But the good news is he's well on his way to recovery—and well enough in October to undergo another, less-stressful, procedure: a smile makeover with dental veneers.

This latest trip to the dentist wasn't Cowell's first experience with the popular restoration, wanting this time to update his smile to more closely resemble what he had when he was younger. He even brought along some older photos for reference.

Veneers aren't exclusive to celebrities like Simon Cowell, as thousands of people who get them every year can attest. These thin wafers of porcelain bonded to teeth can mask a wide range of defects, from chips, wear or discoloration to slight tooth gaps or misalignments. And every veneer is custom-made to match an individual patient's dental dimensions and coloring.

If you're thinking about a smile upgrade, here are a few reasons to consider dental veneers.

More bang for your buck. Compared to other transformative cosmetic options, veneers are relatively affordable, with the cost dependent largely on the extent of your dental needs. Still, dental veneers are an investment that can give long-lasting yields of a more attractive smile and even a completely new look.

Little to no tooth alteration. In most veneer cases, we need only remove a small amount of enamel so the veneers don't appear bulky (the alteration is permanent, though, so you'll need a veneer on the tooth from then on). It's also possible to get “no-prep” veneers requiring little to no alteration.

Durable and long-lasting. Continuing improvements in porcelain and other dental ceramics have led to stronger forms that can better withstand the biting forces your teeth encounter every day. Although you'll still need to be careful biting into hard items, your veneers can last for several years.

Easy to maintain. Veneer cleaning and maintenance is much the same as with natural teeth—daily brushing and flossing, and regular dental cleanings and checkups. Outside of that, you'll need to watch what you chomp down on: Veneers are strong, but not indestructible, and they can break.

As Simon Cowell knows, getting veneers isn't difficult. It starts with an initial visit so we can evaluate your dental health and needs. From there, we can present options on how to update your smile.

Just like adults, teenagers experience chipped, stained or disfigured teeth. And during a life stage where issues with appearance can be acutely painful, these defects call out for a solution.

And, there is one: porcelain veneers. These thin wafers of custom-made porcelain are bonded to the front of teeth to cover dental flaws. They’re one of the least invasive—and most affordable—methods for smile enhancement.

There is one caveat, though: The affected teeth will most likely need alteration. Veneers can look bulky when bonded directly to teeth, so we compensate for this by removing some of the surface enamel. This changes the tooth permanently, to the point that it will always require a veneer or some other form of restoration.

But although this may be a minor issue for an adult, it could pose a problem for a teenager. That’s because the pulp, the innermost layer of a tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, is larger in a younger adolescent tooth than in an older adult tooth. Because of its size, it’s closer to the tooth’s surface. During enamel reduction for veneers on a young tooth, this could lead to inadvertent nerve damage. If that happens, the tooth may need a root canal treatment to preserve it.

If the adolescent tooth needing a “facelift” has already been root canaled or sustained significant structural damage, then altering it for veneers may not be too concerning. Likewise, if the teeth are smaller than normal, the bulkiness of a veneer may actually improve appearance and not require alteration. We’ll need to examine a young patient first before making any recommendations.

There are also alternatives to veneers for improving smile appearance. Enamel staining could be enhanced temporarily with teeth whitening. Small chips can be repaired with bonded dental material, or in skilled hands be used to “build” a veneer one layer at a time with no enamel reduction. Although not as durable as regular veneers, these bonding techniques could buy time until the tooth is more mature for veneers.

Whichever path we take, there are effective ways to transform a teenager’s flawed tooth. And that can make for an even better smile.

What your dentist in Augusta wants you to knowveneers

If you are tired of the way your smile looks, you can change it! If your teeth are damaged, stained or unsightly, porcelain veneers are the solution you’ve been waiting for. If you have wondered how celebrities have such perfect smiles, chances are they have porcelain veneers! Fortunately, you don’t have to be famous to enjoy a perfect smile. Dr. Alan Myers at Myers Family Dental in Augusta, GA wants to share how porcelain veneers can help you.

Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of dazzling porcelain. The laminates are cemented on top of the front surfaces of teeth to create a perfect smile. Porcelain is translucent and reflects light, just like your natural teeth do. That means your porcelain veneers will look naturally beautiful.

According to the American Academy of Cosmetic dentistry, your new porcelain veneers will resist stains too. That means you can be a smoker or coffee drinker and still have a white smile. Veneers are a great choice to cover up minor and major cosmetic dental issues like these:

  • Cracks or chips from trauma, bad habits, or aging
  • Fracture lines or damage from an accident or injury
  • Deep stains or discolorations from medications
  • Spaces or gaps between teeth due to genetics
  • Tooth overlap due to alignment issues

Porcelain veneer treatment typically requires between 2 and 3 appointments, a consultation appointment, tooth preparation appointment, and a final cementation appointment. Dr. Myers will be there for you before, during and after your porcelain veneer treatment.

You can enjoy your perfect smile within a couple of weeks, just in time for a special event you may have coming up. Why not show off your smile at a wedding, class reunion, or even an important job interview?

Porcelain veneers can help you regain your smile! They can help you restore your self-esteem and self-confidence, giving you a smile that shines out to the world. Are you ready to discover how porcelain veneers from your Augusta, GA dentist could give you a more attractive smile?veneers

You’ve been so busy planning your wedding that you haven’t had time to stop and think. Of course, as the planning winds down thoughts may turn to how you want to look for the big day. After all, you’re going to have those pictures forever. If your smile is leaving something to be desired, Dr. Alan Myers of Myers Family Dental in Augusta, Georgia, has just the thing.

Dental veneers, laminates, porcelain veneers. Whatever you want to call them, these super thin tooth-colored shells may be all you need to change the overall look of your smile. Do you want a smile that is just as perfect as the one your favorite actor flaunts on TV? If so, chances are pretty good that they got that smile thanks to dental veneers.

Veneers are a great way to change the shape, length, size and even shade of your teeth. You may choose to only get veneers on teeth that are flawed or you may choose to completely makeover your smile and get a full set of veneers. When you sit down with our Augusta cosmetic dentist we can help determine which is the best option for you.

Veneers can hide a variety of problems from discolorations that teeth whitening can’t treat and moderate chips and cracks to gaps between teeth, minor crowding, and crookedness. Sometimes there are defects within the enamel that can affect the shape and appearance of a tooth. Veneers could be a great way to restore that defected tooth to an ideal shape.

Before you can get veneers we will need to make sure that your teeth are healthy enough for this cosmetic treatment. Through a thorough exam and X-rays we will make sure that there is enough healthy tooth enamel to support your restorations. Once this has been determined your teeth will have to undergo a little preparation so that they are ready to receive the veneers. By removing a small bit of enamel from the front of your teeth, we will create enough room to place the veneers. Just know that once enamel has been removed it will not grow back, so your new veneers are meant for life.

Next, impressions will be taken and a dental lab will go right to work making your veneers. Once they are made, you will come back in so that we can fit you with your beautiful new restorations. Veneers are painlessly bonded to the front of your teeth using resin and a special laser to harden the resin and veneers in place.

If you want to find out if dental veneers are the best option for you, call Myers Family Dental in Augusta, GA, today to book a consultation with Dr. Myers. Let’s find out how we can get your smile ready for the big day.

Learn about the benefits of veneers from your Augusta dentist at Myers Family Dental.

Improving your smile doesn't always have to involve complicated dental work. Many flaws and imperfections can be improved quickly and easily with dental veneers. Alan Myers, DMD, is here to explain how veneers can help you transform your smile.Veneers

What are veneers?

Veneers are very thin pieces of porcelain that fit over the front surfaces of your teeth to conceal flaws. Although they're no thicker than a fingernail, they're very effective at hiding imperfections that mar your smile. Veneers can be used on one tooth or can help several of your teeth look more uniform.

Are veneers the right option for me?

Veneers are very versatile and are used to correct many cosmetic dental issues, including:

  • Chips, pits or cracks in your teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked or misshapen teeth
  • Eroded teeth

They're also a good choice if one or more teeth are stained or discolored. Teeth whitening is a very effective way to lighten your teeth, but there are limits to the whitening power of this treatment. With veneers, you can choose any shade of white you like.

How many visits are needed?

The actual veneer process takes two visits. During your first visit to our Augusta office, Dr. Myers will remove a small amount of enamel from the front surfaces of your teeth. Removing the enamel is an important step because it ensures that your new veneers will fit perfectly. Your dentist will also make an impression of your teeth that will be used to create your veneers.

It usually takes the dental laboratory about one or two weeks to prepare your new veneers. When they're ready, you'll return to your dentist's office for the final step. Before your dentist permanently attaches the veneers with dental cement, he'll check the fit and make any necessary adjustments.

Is it difficult to care for veneers?

You won't have to change your oral hygiene routine after you get veneers. You'll just brush and floss as you usually do. It's a good idea to avoid abrasive toothpastes as they can scratch the surface of your veneers. If you grind or clench your teeth, your dentist may recommend that you wear a nightguard, as clenching or grinding can eventually damage veneers.
