At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!
Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”
We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:
Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.
Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.
Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

The arrival of spring often serves as inspiration to clean house and create an environment that’s bright and fresh. Here at the dental office, we can do the same for your mouth as well! Having clean teeth, healthy gums and fresh breath helps you look and feel your best. Here are some ways we can help you freshen up your smile:
Dental Exam. The best place to start is with a dental exam. Finding and treating tooth decay in its earliest stages will help you avoid more costly and invasive dental treatments later on. It could even save a tooth that might otherwise be lost! Plus, oral cancer screenings are important for everyone—even young, non-smokers. Regular dental exams also give you a chance to bring up any issues you may be concerned about, and to ask for pointers on hygiene.
Professional Cleaning. Having a good oral hygiene routine at home goes a long way towards keeping your mouth healthy. But routine professional cleanings are still very important. Your dental hygienist uses specially designed tools to reach into places where your brush and floss can’t, and remove disease-causing dental plaque and tartar. A polishing provides the finishing touch for a squeaky-clean feeling.
Teeth Whitening. Teeth tend to get duller with age; that’s why teeth whitening treatments can give you a more youthful appearance. Bleaching your teeth is safest when supervised by a dental professional. We recommend two methods: either a professional treatment at the dental office, or a take-home kit we can provide, which includes custom-fitted bleaching trays. The first way will give you the fastest results, while the second is more economical.
Smile Makeover. Sometimes whitening alone is not enough to fix what’s keeping you from flashing a big, bright smile. For example, maybe your teeth aren’t straight, or they have been worn down over the years. Perhaps a tooth is chipped or is missing entirely. Or maybe there are multiple cosmetic issues. If this is the case, we can help you figure out what’s really bothering you about your teeth and how you can achieve the smile of your dreams.
What your dentist in Augusta wants you to know
If you are tired of the way your smile looks, you can change it! If your teeth are damaged, stained or unsightly, porcelain veneers are the solution you’ve been waiting for. If you have wondered how celebrities have such perfect smiles, chances are they have porcelain veneers! Fortunately, you don’t have to be famous to enjoy a perfect smile. Dr. Alan Myers at Myers Family Dental in Augusta, GA wants to share how porcelain veneers can help you.
Porcelain veneers are thin laminates of dazzling porcelain. The laminates are cemented on top of the front surfaces of teeth to create a perfect smile. Porcelain is translucent and reflects light, just like your natural teeth do. That means your porcelain veneers will look naturally beautiful.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic dentistry, your new porcelain veneers will resist stains too. That means you can be a smoker or coffee drinker and still have a white smile. Veneers are a great choice to cover up minor and major cosmetic dental issues like these:
- Cracks or chips from trauma, bad habits, or aging
- Fracture lines or damage from an accident or injury
- Deep stains or discolorations from medications
- Spaces or gaps between teeth due to genetics
- Tooth overlap due to alignment issues
Porcelain veneer treatment typically requires between 2 and 3 appointments, a consultation appointment, tooth preparation appointment, and a final cementation appointment. Dr. Myers will be there for you before, during and after your porcelain veneer treatment.
You can enjoy your perfect smile within a couple of weeks, just in time for a special event you may have coming up. Why not show off your smile at a wedding, class reunion, or even an important job interview?

You’ve been so busy planning your wedding that you haven’t had time to stop and think. Of course, as the planning winds down thoughts may turn to how you want to look for the big day. After all, you’re going to have those pictures forever. If your smile is leaving something to be desired, Dr. Alan Myers of Myers Family Dental in Augusta, Georgia, has just the thing.
Dental veneers, laminates, porcelain veneers. Whatever you want to call them, these super thin tooth-colored shells may be all you need to change the overall look of your smile. Do you want a smile that is just as perfect as the one your favorite actor flaunts on TV? If so, chances are pretty good that they got that smile thanks to dental veneers.
Veneers are a great way to change the shape, length, size and even shade of your teeth. You may choose to only get veneers on teeth that are flawed or you may choose to completely makeover your smile and get a full set of veneers. When you sit down with our Augusta cosmetic dentist we can help determine which is the best option for you.
Veneers can hide a variety of problems from discolorations that teeth whitening can’t treat and moderate chips and cracks to gaps between teeth, minor crowding, and crookedness. Sometimes there are defects within the enamel that can affect the shape and appearance of a tooth. Veneers could be a great way to restore that defected tooth to an ideal shape.
Before you can get veneers we will need to make sure that your teeth are healthy enough for this cosmetic treatment. Through a thorough exam and X-rays we will make sure that there is enough healthy tooth enamel to support your restorations. Once this has been determined your teeth will have to undergo a little preparation so that they are ready to receive the veneers. By removing a small bit of enamel from the front of your teeth, we will create enough room to place the veneers. Just know that once enamel has been removed it will not grow back, so your new veneers are meant for life.
Next, impressions will be taken and a dental lab will go right to work making your veneers. Once they are made, you will come back in so that we can fit you with your beautiful new restorations. Veneers are painlessly bonded to the front of your teeth using resin and a special laser to harden the resin and veneers in place.
If you want to find out if dental veneers are the best option for you, call Myers Family Dental in Augusta, GA, today to book a consultation with Dr. Myers. Let’s find out how we can get your smile ready for the big day.
As a member of the best-selling pop group Spice Girls, Mel C (AKA Sporty Spice) enjoyed her share of musical superstardom. At the band’s peak in the Nineties, the young singer’s signature look featured baggy sweatpants, an assortment of tattoos, a nose stud and a gold-capped incisor, front and center in her mouth. Today, Melanie Chisholm is still singing — but now she’s a mom, an amateur triathlete… and that gold tooth is just a memory. Not only that, her smile looks more evenly spaced and whiter than it did when she was referred to as the “tomboy” of the group.
What happened? In our view, it all boils down to changing tastes — plus a little bit of help from dental professionals. As the “wannabe” singer proves, there’s no single standard when it comes to making your teeth look their best. Your own look is unique to you — and your smile can reflect that individuality.
For example, crowns (caps) are substantial coverings that may be placed on teeth when they are being restored. They are available in three types: gold, all-porcelain, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The latter two are tooth-colored, while the gold is — well, shiny like gold bling. Which one is right for you? In many cases, it’s your choice.
Likewise, dental veneers — wafer-thin shells that can correct cosmetic issues by covering the surface of your teeth — can be made in a variety of shades. Their hues may range from natural ivory to Hollywood white, and everything in between. What’s the best color for you? Only you can say.
Some people opt for a “smile makeover” that uses small irregularities in the spacing and color of teeth to create a more “natural” look. Other folks want a perfectly even, brilliant white smile that dazzles the eye. Still others are looking to match or restore the smile they once had — perhaps even re-creating a signature gap between the teeth. As long as there are no other dental issues involved, the choice is yours.
So if you’re unhappy with your smile — or if you feel it doesn’t reflect the person you “wannabe” — why not talk to us about a smile makeover? Just call our office to schedule a consultation. You can learn more about this topic in the Dear Doctor magazine articles “Beautiful Smiles by Design” and “The Impact of a Smile Makeover.”
